5 Spring Skiing Essentials

The more snow, the longer the ski season lasts. That’s why Mammoth Mountain is one of the best spring skiing resorts in America.

Thanks to Mammoth’s heavy average snowfall and high elevation you’ll have plenty of time to take in the best spring skiing in America. If you’re going to do that though, then you’ll need these spring skiing essentials. Check out our list below, then visit the ASO Mammoth shop for the best ski and snowboard rentals in Mammoth Lakes!

A Waterproof Shell

After a long winter full of cold weather, it can be tempting to wear clothing like hoodies and t-shirts on the slopes once the temperatures rise. While we fully support soaking up every ray of warm sunshine however you can, you should also bring a waterproof shell to stay dry.

Simply put, warm weather means slushy snow, and if you’re not wearing waterproof clothing then that snow is going to soak you and make you cold. Even if you don’t fall, snow is still going to end up on your clothes, so bring waterproof pants and at least a shell for your spring skiing trip.

Don’t Forget Base Layers

If the weather is warm then you may think you don’t need your base layers any longer. While it may not be as cold, a good base layer does more than just keep you warm since they can also keep you dry.

The best base layers are moisture-wicking, which means they pull moisture like sweat away from your skin so you don’t get cold. When the weather turns warm you’ll be more likely to sweat, so don’t leave your base layers at home!

Sunscreen

It feels fantastic to have sunshine on your skin, but too much will leave you burnt, itchy, and uncomfortable. There’s already plenty of sunshine in spring, but snow naturally reflects sunlight so you need protection if you’re going to ski and snowboard this spring.

Different Temperature Waxes

Don’t forget that the wax that we use on skis and snowboards reacts differently to different types of snow. Some waxes are meant for cold, hard snow. Others are meant for the soft and slushy snow that you’ll find on the slopes during spring.

If you find yourself moving slowly on spring snow then try a different temperature wax to adjust to the conditions. You’ll ski and snowboard faster and more smoothly.

Plans to Enjoy the Weather Off the Mountain

One thing that all skiers and snowboarders have in common is that they love being outside and in nature. That’s why they love spending every moment outside in nice weather, even when the snow is melting around them.

Take full advantage of everything spring has to offer and the good mood of everyone near the slopes by planning to spend time outside. You’ll find incredible atmospheres and even better people to share your enthusiasm for spring weather and snow sports. You might even find a pond skim celebrating the end of the ski season!
