Can I Snowboard during the Summer at Mammoth?

Thanks to the higher elevations and other Eastern Sierra geographic features, Mammoth is a winter activity lover’s paradise even outside the traditional winter months. This means it’s often possible to continue to snowboard when visiting Mammoth Mountain pretty close to or even right into parts of the summer months. Keep reading to get the scoop on later-season snowboarding in Mammoth, brought to you by the friendly folks at ASO Mammoth, your year-round one-stop shop for everything from fishing gear to mountain biking equipment and Mammoth snowboard rental.

Snowboarding Season Usually Ends Memorial Day Weekend

Mammoth almost always has long winter seasons that go beyond the actual winter months. With snowboarding and skiing, the resort typically wraps things up on Memorial Day weekend. The main reason is the increase in temperatures, since anything too far above freezing isn’t ideal for artificial snowmaking with the system Mammoth uses. For 2022, Mammoth’s tentative end-of-season date is May 30th for snowboarding and other winter-related activities.

There Have Been Exceptions

We used the word “tentative” because conditions sometimes remain ideal for snowboarding after Memorial Day weekend. There have also been times when heavy snow seasons have kept conditions suitable for snowboarding into parts of the summer. For example, in 2017, a near-record-breaking winter season allowed Mammoth to remain accessible for snowboarding until August 6th.

This is a not-so-common exception. Still, there have been several times throughout Mammoth’s long history when snowboarding has been possible into part of the summer. More recently, in 2021, Mammoth ended the skiing and snowboarding season on May 31st. An exception in the other direction was in 2020, when the winter activity season ended early due to COVID. In 2019, though, you could snowboard while visiting Mammoth until July 7th.

Check before You Plan Your Visit

If you’re planning a late-spring or early-summer visit to Mammoth, take a moment to check conditions in the area first. This is something you can easily do with the Mammoth app. The resort has winter and summer apps you’re welcome to download. Also, check the Mammoth website to see if the season has been extended. Even if the snowboarding season ends around Memorial Day, there are still plenty of things to do in the summer in Mammoth and throughout the area. Popular activities include:

• Hiking, biking, and camping
• Fishing in Mammoth Lakes and nearby areas
• Scenic gondola rides at Mammoth Mountain
• Guided climbing excursions
• Family fun at the Mammoth Adventure Center at the Main Lodge

Expect Softer Snow for Later-Season Snowboarding

Statistically, there’s roughly a 50-50 chance summer snowboarding may be possible in Mammoth to some extent. If the snowboarding season does extend into summer, be prepared for softer snow. Otherwise, you should have a fun experience as long as conditions are suitable for keeping everything open and accessible.
