Should I Rent or Buy Skis & Boots when I Go on a Skiing Trip?

At a very minimum, you’ll need a good pair of ski boots and skis personally suitable for you to have a fun, productive skiing experience. When it comes to obtaining these essential items, there are two options to consider: renting and buying. Below, we go through the top considerations and factors associated with each option so you can decide what’s best for you.

Ski Boots—Renting vs Buying

Buying is generally recommended with ski boots. The reason is because it’s typically easier to find ones that fit better if you purchase them. One notable exception is if you’re just getting into skiing. In this instance, it’s fine to rent boots as long as you take the time to choose a pair that properly fits. Once you’ve determined skiing is something you’ll be doing on a fairly regular basis, investing in a top-quality pair of boots is worth considering.

Rental boots also tend to be designed for the most common foot type, which usually means a deeper and wider design. If this is what applies to you, you’ll likely have more options with rental boots. If you have more unique foot features, you may prefer to buy boots instead to avoid related foot issues. With either rental ski boots or ones you buy, pay attention to:

• Comfort – Choose a pair that supports your feet and ankles well.

• Fit – Ski boots should be snug but not so tight that your circulation is affected.

• Flexibility – You still want to be able to maintain some degree of flexibility and motion around your ankles.

Also with ski boots, try them on with the boots attached to the skis when possible. Doing so allows you to determine how much flexibility you’ll still have once the boots are locked in place.

Skis—Renting vs Buying

There’s more leeway with skis. If you’re just testing the waters with skiing, renting skis from a Mammoth ski rental shop makes more sense. Plus, if you go to a rental shop near your preferred ski destination, you should be able to get some advice specific to your physical features and abilities. This added input can be really helpful if you’re new to skiing.

On the other hand, if you’re a more experienced or avid skier, you may prefer to invest in your own skis. Buying also gives you more flexibility with personalized features and designs. But even if you’re an experienced skier, renting can be beneficial in some ways. For instance, it’s an affordable way to try out newer models and designs before you fully invest in another pair of skis. With either rental skis or ones you purchase, make your selection based on the following factors:

• Body size and type
• Your preferred terrain
• Your skill level*

*Beginners tend to be more comfortable with shorter skis. However, more advanced skiers may prefer longer skis that allow for more aggressive moves.
