From spectacular views to a nearly limitless list of outdoor activity possibilities throughout the year, there’s much to do, see, and enjoy when visiting Mammoth Mountain. Boasting an elevation of more than 11,000 feet, the mountain itself is surrounded by a popular resort and a nearby town with even more possibilities for fun things to do. Below, we shine a spotlight on seven ways to have fun on Mammoth Mountain.
1. Skiing & Snowboarding
Skiing and snowboarding are the more popular winter activities you can enjoy on Mammoth Mountain and the various hills that surround it. The beginner-level areas are at the base of the mountain, and the more advanced spots can be accessed from the lifts. The resort also hosts competitions throughout the ski season. If you’re new to skiing or snowboarding, sign up for on-site lessons before your arrival. You can also take advantage of Mammoth ski rental or snowboard rental to get what you need to enjoy either one of these activities.
2. Snow Tubing & Snowmobiling
The snow that covers Mammoth Mountain for a big chunk of the early part of the year isn’t just for skiing and snowboarding. There are also designated spots where you can have fun snow tubing over easily manageable terrain. If you prefer a bit more adventure with your fun, sign up for a guided snowmobiling excursion before you get here to power your way through the snow.
3. Hiking
Once the snow is gone, you’ll be able to access trails of varying lengths and degrees of difficulty, most of which offer amazing views of nearby natural wonders. The Mammoth Mountain Trail starts at the Main Lodge and continues to the summit. You can always get a ride to the mid-station or summit and work your way down instead. The vegetation thins as you get higher, though, so you’ll be rewarded with gorgeous clear views if you hike your way up the mountain.
Note: Free hiking guides are available at the Adventure Center.
4. Biking
If your idea of fun is working your way through an assortment of pavers, berms, jumps, and drops, all you have to do is rent a standard bike or an e-bike when coming to Mammoth. The mountain has more than 80 miles of bike trails ideal for varying skill levels. The Mammoth Bike Park is where you can access the bike trails here. For beginners, the Discovery Zone is a great starting point. If you’re at the expert level, you’ll love the bike paths in the Derailed Zone.
5. Guided Climbing
Mammoth Mountain has a network of climbing routes referred to as Via Ferrata, or “iron path.” These climbing spots are safe to access and provide breathtaking views from uniquely appealing vantage points. Register in advance of your visit, and you can have some fun with a guided climbing adventure.
6. Taking Scenic Gondola Rides
You don’t need to have a love for outdoor activities to have fun on Mammoth Mountain. If you’re all about the scenery, you should enjoy a scenic gondola ride. The Eleven53 Café at the summit is a great place to grab some tasty treats after you snap a few selfies by the summit sign. Telescopes are also set up inside the café so you view the mountain and nearby areas.
7. Enjoying the Seasonal Holidays
Mammoth Mountain is a fantastic place to visit for any of the major holidays throughout the year. The resort here regularly has seasonal and holiday-themed events at the Main Lodge and other spots on or around the mountain. These events typically include family-friendly games, food and drinks, and an assortment of activities visitors are welcome to enjoy.
