Mammoth Mountain is a year-round resort in California featuring a variety of activities, such as hiking, horseback riding, and camping. The most popular summer activity is mountain biking, while in the winter, there’s snowboarding, skiing, and snowmobiling. There’s always something to do, no matter the season. Hiking
Taking a gondola ride up to the middle of the mountain or to the summit allows for the perfect scenic hiking adventure. At the base of the mountain, there are two moderate round-trip trails. The Discovery Trail is about an hour, and the Minaret Vista trail is about two hours. The Starkweather Trail is a moderate one-way hike and takes two hours or less. The two mid-mountain trails are moderate and one-way. The Main Lodge Trail takes about an hour, and the St. Anton Trail takes about two. The Mountain Summit has two strenuous trails. The Mammoth Mountain Trail and the Dragon’s Back are about three hours.
Biking
Mammoth Bike Park is open daily until September 22nd. It has over eighty miles of tracks that include berms, drops, and jumps. If you’re new to mountain biking, the Discovery Zone is the place for you. People learn about various terrains at their own pace. There are iconic trails for intermediate to expert riders. When it comes to cross-country mountain biking, there are intermediate routes for everyone.
Skiing and Snowboarding
Skiing and snowboarding season opens on November 9th. When it comes to skiing, there are over 19 miles of secluded tracks for cross-country available from 8:30 am to 4 pm Monday through Thursday and 8:30 am to 5 pm Friday through Sunday. There are free shuttles from the village to the lodge. The Mammoth ski rentals include the poles and boots. The Tamarack Ski School is open for new skiers or pros who want to push their skills further. The season ends on April 16th.
The Unbound Terrain Parks for snowboarding have twenty years of progression in their history. The parks cover over 100 acres of terrain. The main park is the largest and offers the 22-foot halfpipe. Only expert skiers are allowed. The smaller south park is for advanced skiers only. It holds an 18-foot halfpipe, jib lines, and jump lines. There are many rail boxes, bowls, and wallrides as well. The Disco, Eagle, and Wonderland Playgrounds are for beginners to gain their confidence. Once those are mastered, the Forest Trail should be the next step.
Exploring
Snowshoes are for those who want to explore the scenic views during the winter but aren’t good at skiing. Snowshoes, poles, boots, and pull sleds for children are available for rental. By going with the Forest Service naturalist on a Naturalist Tour, you can learn about the trees, animals, and surrounding area. Full Moon Tours offer an after-dark moonlit excursion for a fee. Tours are available from mid-December to mid-April.
