Most people don’t equate snow with the month of June, especially in places like California, where sunshine is common and summers are typically very much on the warm side. But there are some exceptions, even in sunny California. One place where snow may continue to fall well into June is Mammoth Mountain. The friendly folks at ASO Mammoth, your year-round one-stop shop for everything from fishing gear to mountain biking equipment and Mammoth snowboard rental, offer some advice about the snowfall potential in Mammoth if you have plans to visit in June.
You Can Usually Ski in Late Spring & Early Summer
Ski season in the Mammoth area typically begins in October or November and extends well into the spring and sometimes into the early summer. In fact, there are even times when it’s possible to ski in Mammoth in July. Nestled in the city of Mammoth Lakes within the Inyo National Forest, Mammoth Mountain itself is a lava dome with an elevation of 11,059 feet. It’s this high elevation that allows for snowfall well past the times of the year when it normally snows in the lower elevations in California.
Check Snow Conditions Online
June is the last month when it regularly snows anywhere in the Mammoth area, although there may still be occasional snowfall in July, as mentioned above. Since the weather, even at higher elevations, varies from one year to the next, if you have plans to visit Mammoth, check ahead of time to get a feel for what snow conditions are at the moment. If you’re seeing reports of a lot of snow in the middle or later part of May, odds are good you’ll be able to ski or snowboard in Mammoth in June.
Plan Your June Ski Trip Online
If you have your heart set on a June trip to Mammoth that involves snow-based activities, you can easily purchase your lift tickets for Mammoth online. There are many options with ticket purchases that can work out well for a June trip. Some of these include:
• Single-day lift tickets
• 2–4-day tickets if you have plans for a weekend getaway
• 3–5-day and 4–6-day tickets for longer trips
You can even purchase gondola tickets if you want to snap some selfies above the scenic snow-covered summit in June without actually skiing. If this is your preference, you can always head to the Main Lodge and sip some hot chocolate to give yourself that wintry feeling in a more cozy setting.
Note: As of May 2021, Mammoth Mountain is scheduled to remain open through Memorial Day weekend. However, it’s typical for the closing date to be extended into June if conditions are right.
You’re Welcome to Mix Things Up Activity-Wise
Another great thing about the high probability of snowfall in June in Mammoth is that you can also make your way down to the Mammoth Lakes area to enjoy summertime activities during your trip. For instance, there’s the multi-use Mammoth Lakes Trail System you can use to walk, hike, or bike. You can even make your way to one of the five lakes in the area to get in some fishing while taking a break from skiing, since fishing season typically starts here at the end of April.
No matter what time of year you visit Mammoth Mountain, you’re sure to find plenty of fun, relaxing ways to enjoy your stay.
