Mammoth Lakes’ Kids Fishing Festival: Everything You Need to Know

The annual Kids Fishing Festival at Mammoth Lakes is just around the corner. This year’s festival will be held on Saturday, July 27th and promises to be another great family event. The friendly folks at ASO Mammoth, your year-round one-stop shop for everything from fishing equipment and licenses to mountain biking gear and Mammoth ski rentals, offer all you need to know about this unique festival.

Details

Now in its 32nd year, the Kids Fishing Festival will take place at the Snowcreek Ponds adjacent to the Snowcreek Resort rental office on Old Mammoth Road. This event is free to all children ages 14 and under. All the fun gets started at 8am. You can come and go as you please throughout the day. Although rods and reels will be provided to participants, you can also choose to bring along your own gear and equipment. This event even provides complimentary fish cleaning, allowing your children to take their fish home and make it for dinner.

Fishing Fun

The ponds will be stocked with fish from the Desert Springs Trout Farm. Every child will receive a California Fishing Passport along with a fish identification book from the California Department of Fish & Wildlife to get them started. Regional game wardens will be on hand to answer questions and provide instructions. Eastern Sierra and Berkeley will also have representatives at the festival ready to help kids reel in those whoppers. All children will come away with their own fish! Smokey Bear and the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area mascot, Woolly, will both be on hand for pictures and fun.

Festival Events

There’s no shortage of fun to be had at the Kids Fishing Festival. Some of the most popular events include the fly-tying lessons, trout t-shirt painting booth, casting lessons, and a living stream aquarium tank. An entomology and dissection booth will encourage kids to check out a variety of aquatic insects under the lens of a microscope and see what a trout looks like when it’s been dissected. There will also be information available on the Fishing in the City and passport programs. There will be treats such as tacos, drinks, and sno-cones available for purchase if you decide to make a day out of this fun-filled event. If you arrive early, the Lions Club will be giving out free donuts, juice, and coffee for your enjoyment.

Sponsors

The Mammoth Lakes Kids Fishing Festival is a true community event. The festival relies on sponsors to pull off all this family fun. This year, the event welcomes the Mammoth Lakes Rotary Club as a new sponsor. Other contributing sponsors include the Town of Mammoth Lakes, the Mammoth Lakes Lions Club, Snowcreek Resort, and the California Department of Fish & Wildlife.
