There’s nothing quite like late summer and early fall in Mammoth Lakes. We’re happy to report that September is an excellent time to come to Mammoth Lakes and the Mammoth area in general. If you need an added incentive to pack your bags and head to Mammoth, the friendly folks at ASO Mammoth, your year-round one-stop shop for everything from fishing gear to mountain biking equipment and Mammoth snowboard rentals, offer a rundown of the top reasons to come to Mammoth Lakes as the days get a bit cooler and shorter.
The Weather
Mammoth Lakes is a perfect place to come in the fall because of the weather we just mentioned. It’s not too hot and not too cold, so you won’t need to pack a bunch of layers when you come. However, you’ll still want to bring some warmer clothes, since it gets a bit chilly in the mornings and as the days wind down.
The Fishing
You can actually fish in the Mammoth Lakes area until around the middle of November. This makes September a great time to come to the area to try your hand at angling for fish, and some of the lakes have larger-sized trout that make it well worth the effort. You’ll also be treated to beautiful mountain views as you fish, especially if you make your way to the Mammoth Lakes Basin. Many of these lakes also have lake-adjacent cabins you’re welcome to stay in if you prefer convenient access to the water.
The Camping
September is also a great time to come to Mammoth Lakes to set up camp and enjoy some time at any of the many public campsites scattered throughout the Mammoth area. In fact, many of them are nestled right by the lakes, so you’ll be treated to cool lake breezes as you camp and have fun. Camping is also a great group activity if you’re on the hunt for a reason to come here with your family or a bunch of your friends.
The Luxurious Possibilities
Mammoth Mountain, the local resort in the area, owns quite a few properties in and around the area. If camping isn’t really your thing, you can always book a stay at one of the nearby properties the resort owns and operates. The resort also regularly posts specials on its website, which provides even more of an incentive to plan a September trip here.
The Local Resort
Mammoth Mountain is a hub of activity in September and pretty much throughout the entire year. You won’t have any snow to ski or snowboard on just yet—that usually starts in mid-November. However, the resort is always hosting events. Scheduled events for this September at Mammoth Mountain include:
• Mammoth Rock ‘n Rye – A two-day music festival that includes wine tasting
- Summit Sunset Party – A special event that lets you take a scenic gondola ride to the summit of the mountain
• Mammoth Gran Fondo – A biking event that takes you through some of the most scenic sites in the region
• Mammoth Trail Fest – Another great group activity for September, this multiday event includes opportunities to take in the many fantastic sites here while challenging yourself with a 50K or 26K trail run
